An engineering student from Delhi who found his calling in Mumbai, Sushant Singh Rajput is tinsel town’s next promising face. He speaks to Manju Ramanan on following his passion
Tell us about Shuddh Desi Romance ?
Yes, my next film is called Shuddh Desi Romance and it is a film with Manish Sharma. Jaideep Sahni called me for an audition and I met Manish who didn’t know much about my television roles. And he offered me Shuddh Desi Romance where I play Raghu. Parineeti Chopra and Vaani Kapoor are the female protagonists of the film. The film is written by Jaideep Sahni, and produced by Aditya Chopra. The film has Rishi Kapoor too.
How was Parineeti to work with ?
Parineeti is a wonderfully natural actor and when you get to work with her, you learn a lot. I am told I am spontaneous as well and the chemistry is right for everyone to see.
Do you consider yourself lucky?
I have always followed my heart. Yes I won a scholarship during my Delhi Engineering College days and dropped out on the sixth semester. I got so passionate about theatre that I thought that even if I don’t get paid my entire life I would like to pursue theatre. My parents were aghast and didn’t react at all because they were in a state of shock.
That would have been a huge decision?
I come from a family where one of my sisters is a criminal lawyer in the Supreme Court of India, one is a doctor and I myself was an All India topper and ranked 7 in Engineering college in 2004. I gave it all up because I felt that I needed to pursue my passion. The whole agenda was not money or fame but the entire process that excited me.
Following one’s passion is a tough call?
I left for Mumbai and pursued theatre there. One day I got a call from Balaji Telelfilms and television happened and my role as Manav Deshmukh in the daily soap Pavitra Rishta was appreciated. Two years later I was at at the peak and I got a call from Abhishek Kapoor for Kaipo Che and they took me on board.
Do you see TV stars break new ground in the film industry?
I don’t find any logical explanation for that. Shahrukh Khan is one of them, so is Ayushmann Khurrana and George Clooney. All these stars have had good careers on television and then moved on to be very successful film stars. I was doing theatre with Barry John and he taught me that the medium in which you act is not important. If you pretend to the level of belief, the medium is never important, he used to say. It is not important what film-makers want. What is important is how they do their jobs.
