Saif Ali Khan isn’t just juggling lady loves in Happy Ending, the multi-tasking actor also fits in a cameo in the film.
Raj Nidimoru who has directed the quirky rom-com with Krishna DK, admits that the role of a rock star was written for another actor. “But then we thought it would be cool if Saif played it, because his character, a philosopher, had once dreamt of becoming what Yogi (the rockstar) is today. Of course, our film, unlike many, does not dwell on the back stories of the characters. It’s more of a nod to his dreams,” points out Raj.
Their suggestion that he do the guest appearance in his own film took Saif by surprise but he quickly fell in with their plans. It helped that he is a guitarist who has performed at concerts with the band Parikrama.
Raj admits that Saif’s character in the film has parallels to the real Saif and self-deprecatory humour. The actor pitched in to put together the look of the character too.
“All three of us are fans of the Coen Brothers. Yogi’s like the ‘dude’ from Big Lebowski who is always there when Yudi needs his unsolicited advice,” says Raj. “Though a guest appearance, it is a pivotal role with Yogi flitting into the story through the film.
The colourful character is seen strumming the guitar with a group of lingerie-clad women in a song. “We shot in Mumbai on a set which looks like an American shower stall,” says Raj. “Saif has done many romcoms but this one’s unlike any happily-ever after love story you’ve seen. A cameo by the lead actor itself makes it different.”
